VEITCH, George J. - Born January 9, 1873, Holyrood, Newfoundland, the son of John and Ellen (Joy) Veitch.  Educated at High School, Holyrood and finished school in 1885 and entered the Telegraph Service; taking charge of the telegraph office at St. Joseph's in 1886.  In 1893 he was transferred to Port Blandford to open the first telegraph office there after the Newfoundland Railway went through.  During the following two years worked as clerk in the Government Telegraph Service, St. John's.  Transferred to Whitbourne office to take charge in 1895.  Promoted to chief operator and clerk in charge of the St. John's office after the expiration of the Anglo-American Telegraphs monopoly in 1904 under Superintendent Stott.  Appointed Superintendent of Newfoundland Postal Telegraphs by the Government on October 1, 1924.  Married at Whitbourne July 3, 1900 to Annie Hanrahan.  Children; William and Mary.  Mrs. Veitch deceased before 1930.
