GOODE, Sir William - (Athelstane Meredith), K.B.E., cr. 1918. Born June 10, 1875 in Newfoundland, the son of Rev. T.A. Goode. Educated at Foyle College, Ireland. Goode served as purser in British merchant marine; in 4th United States Cavalry in 1894. Assistant night city editor New York Recorder 1895. City editor New York Mercury with the Associated Press of America 1896-1904, representing them on Admiral Sampson's flagship throughout the Spanish-American War; and in England for six years as Special Correspondent. News and managing editor Standard 1904-1910. Joint news editor Daily Mail 1911. Commander of the Order of the Crown of Belgium; Commander of the Order of Queen Isabella the Catholic. Hon. Secretary British Committee, Panama-Pacific Exposition 1914. Publications: Economic Conditions in Central Europe; With Sampson Through the War; A History of the Naval Operations in the West Indies. During the Spanish-American War, he wrote short stories in magazine. Unofficial Adviser to Hungarian Government; Liaison Officer of the Ministry of Food with the United States and Canadian Food Administration 1917-1920. Director of the Cable Department, Ministry of Food; Hon. Secretary and Organizer of the National Committee for Relief in Belgium; Member of the Newfoundland West Indian Military Contingent Committees; British Director of Relief in Paris February 1919 to June 1920; President of and British representative on the Austrian section of the Reparation Commission, Vienna 1920-1921. Married Cecelia Sippi in 1899, daughter of Dr. C.a. Sippi, London, Ontario.
